CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral is an extremely gentle yet powerful healing process. It encourages the body to release deeply held patterns of disease and discomfort and to function more freely.
Craniosacral Therapy dates back to 1970 when osteopath John E. Upledger first witnessed the craniosacral rhythm during a spinal surgery. He later attended a course developed by Dr. William Sutherland focusing on bones of the skull and their movement throughout life, which became Cranial Osteopathy. Upledger put this information together with his findings on the pulsing rhythm and found that there was a hydraulic system inside the craniosacral system. In 1985, he established The Upledger Institute and showed how a light-touch therapy can evaluate and treat problems involving the brain and spinal cord.
The CranioSacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth down to the sacrum or tailbone area. Any imbalance or restriction in this vital system could cause any number of neurological disabilities.
How is CranioSacral Therapy performed?
CranioSacral Therapy is performed on a person fully clothed. The client lies on his/her back on a soft, comfortable air mattress and is then covered with a blanket. A light pressure (about the weight of a 20p piece) is then applied to monitor the rhythm of the craniosacral system to detect any restrictions and imbalances.
CranioSacral therapy is a gentle and non-invasive therapy and releases restrictions in body tissues caused by physical or emotional trauma.
CranioSacral Therapy is deeply relaxing and is beneficial to everyone. It is extremely gentle so it can be used on acutely painful and delicate conditions where other therapies may not be appropriate. CranioSacral Therapy often helps newborns, infants and children suffering with colic, hyperactivity feeding and sleeping problems.
